Super Speedo

Remember I had a rant on here not too long ago where I questioned the decision of DC Comics revamping the Man of Steel's suit yet again? Well, turns out that after allowing some time to become used to the new duds, they are slowly starting to grow on me. Who knew? Now that I've seen actor Henry Cavill's red Speedo-less suit for the upcoming SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL, and have come across Supe's reworked attire in a few comic books I've brought home for my kids - I start to see that it really kind of makes sense to lose the shorts.

When you think about it, Batman's costume has been in constant flux from the beginning. Robin went through a major overhaul back in the late 80's/early 90's and is still changing for the better. I suppose it's because Superman is such an icon that his suit would seem untouchable, but everything changes - and sometimes those changes are for the better. The shorts, upon reflection, were a proper part of the era (and area) of the times in which he was created - and just like Bats lost his shorts and gray and blue color motif for the black, full-body-armor suit of the movies - I now understand that it's time for Supes to lose his, too.

Superman Getting New Costume in 'Action Comics' Relaunch

Superman will go get a new look in the 21st century reboot of "Action Comics," DC Comics said Friday. According to the LA Times, the long-running comic series will restart at No. 1 in September and one of the most notable changes to the original comics so far is Superman's costume. Although the Man of Steel still sports a skin-tight blue suit and his iconic red cape on the new cover, he no longer has the added protection of the Speedo-like red trunks he's worn since the first issue of "Action Comics," published in June 1938. His belt is also changing color from yellow to red. In addition to the Superman franchise, DC Comics also plans to relaunch other titles in the DC Universe, which includes superheroes such as Batman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern. New characters, stories and, of course, costumes will be introduced across the board.

[Me here] Personally, I hate it when comics do this - and DC Comics seems to be the worst about introducing 'new' costumes and relaunching various titles at 'Number 1.' I know the comics biz is dog-eat-dog and you have to do what you have to do to sell titles, but it all seems so desperate - so 'soap opera-ish.' AND it's already been done: remember black Superman (with the white 'S'?) from when they killed off Supes? Or how about 'Knightfall' from when they broke Batman's back? I'm hoping that this phase will pass just like all the rest; maybe sales will reflect that fans want Superman's costume to remain the same as always.

We can only hope - because seeing the last son of Krypton without his red speedos and yellow belt is like seeing the American flag without its stars and stripes...
