Children In The Corn

Haunted Carter Farms, located in my old stomping grounds of Iowa, is one of the oldest haunted cornfield mazes in America. They have chosen to theme this year's attraction after Midnight Syndicate Films' 2010 dark fantasy horror film, THE DEAD MATTER. The design of the 5-acre maze blends cover art from the DVD and elements from Midnight Syndicate's The Dead Matter: Cemetery Gates CD. In addition to taking guests through scenes from The Dead Matter movie, haunt designers took themes explored in the film and developed their own additional original scenes. Music and several original props from the film will be featured in the attraction. The haunt is open every Friday and Saturday in October and Halloween night from 7:00pm to 10:30pm. Admission is $12.

Carnival Arcane

New Midnight Syndicate studio album Carnival Arcane to be released August 2011.

February 8, 2011 (Cleveland, OH) Gothic, Halloween, Fantasy, Horror music composers, Midnight Syndicate have announced plans to release a new album entitled, Carnival Arcane this August. The band's fourteenth album in as many years, Carnival Arcane takes listeners on a journey through an early-20th century traveling carnival with a mysterious and sinister past. "The 'dark carnival' is a classic horror theme. We're really excited to put our own spin on it," said Gavin Goszka. "The heyday of the traveling carnival was the late-19th and early-20th century, which is the time period that really appeals to us in all our work with Midnight Syndicate," added Edward Douglas. Carnival Arcane comes on the heels of a busy year for Midnight Syndicate that marked the release of their first motion picture, The Dead Matter, the soundtrack to that film, a collaboration with vocalist Destini Beard entitled The Dark Masquerade, a "best of" collection, and the band's first two music videos. Here's a little sneak preview of an upcoming interview we'll be featuring with none other than Edward Douglas, founder of the famous gothic Halloween-music band Midnight Syndicate, and director of their first feature film: 'The Dead Matter.' Many thanks go out to Mr. Douglas for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk with us - it was truly an honor!

DIOTD: As a director, you have your own unique vision you bring to the production. But with that being said, are there any directors out there that inspired you to become a director? Or contemporary directors that knock you out visually today?


ED: George Romero is probably my single greatest influence. Not only as a director but as an independent filmmaker who proved that you could make a brilliant horror film in the midwest, outside of the Hollywood system, with limited resources. "Night of the Living Dead" and "Creepshow" had a huge influence on me and inspired me to do "The Dead Matter." Sam Raimi is another one from the midwest who started way outside the system and made it happen through perseverence. As an indie filmmaker, you look up to those icons. Growing up it was Stephen Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock movies that first got me to pick up a camera and shoot. As far as contemporary directors, I really enjoy so many of the horror films coming out today it's hard to single some out without missing a bunch. I appreciate films like "Let the Right One In", "Dead Girl," and "Human Centipede" for pushing the boundaries of horror cinema. I really enjoy a well-shot ghost story like "The Orphanage," "Reincarnation," "Ghost Ship," and "The Abandoned" just to name a very few.
