Talking Dead

Wow. That's my assessment for last night's mid-season finale of AMC's hit show: THE WALKING DEAD. The producer's of said show have really outdone themselves - and this after there was so much uneasiness after Frank Darabont took a back-seat in the show's production at the beginning of Season 2. But after last night's 'Episode 7: Pretty Much Dead Already,' we needn't worry any longer about the direction of the show. Gripping, intense, emotional - it will be difficult to wait until February 12th to see how it all plays out at Herschel's farm.

You may be asking yourself: "Is it really that good?" The answer is yes - THE WALKING DEAD, particularly last night's episode, was quite frankly THE BEST zombie story I've seen put to film, and this includes George Romero's movies. High praise coming from this zombie lover!

Random Thoughts

Here are some utterly random thoughts of cool things I really dig (and one not so much...)

Question: Did my wife really just download the app ZOMBIE HIGHWAY on her iPhone? Yes. Yes, she did. Is it awesome? Yes. Yes, it is. Am I any good at it? Answer: Despite my affinity for the living dead, it looks like I will be one of the first to be eaten when the zombie apocalypse finally hits.

While GHOST HUNTERS has clearly upped the ante on their amount of ghostly evidence, this may be my new favorite show. PARANORMAL WITNESS airs on the SyFy channel and man is it ever creepy! Quite possibly the scariest thing on TV, last night's episode gave me a serious case of the heebie-jeebies. Similar to an older show with the same format called THE HAUNTING (which aired on a different network), this one has much better production values and isn't quite so hokey. Good stuff and worth checking out!

Remember the Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin soap I bought from Bath & Body Works? Yeah, it doesn't smell like Cinnamon. Or pumpkins. When you unscrew the cap to sniff it at the store it sort of does - but when you get it home and excitedly gush a mountain of foam on to your hands it just smells like flowerery, perfumey soap. Like grandma soap. Like they simply changed the color dye in the bottle from one of their summer flower fragrances to orange and slapped a cool jack-'o-lantern sticker on it. You've been warned...

P.S. The black Marshmallow fragrance with the spider's web on it actually smells like marshmallows. What marshmallows have to do with Halloween is beyond me.

WWZ

Man - I was afraid this would happen. One of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time, I was so looking forward to how Max Brooks' apocalyptic WORLD WAR Z would play out on the big screen. But leave it to Hollywood - who hasn't had an original idea in a decade - to take one of the most popular novels in the past few years and basically dumb it down for the masses instead of finding an intelligent way to make the pseudo-documentary the source novel sets up. If this proves to be true, then director Marc Forster is really making Brooks' other zombie novel: the ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE, which would be cool in itself, but not nearly as radical as trying to tell the flashback-heavy story of WWZ. Read on:

"Sorry, "World War Z" fans: It seems that the movie, which will star Brad Pitt and be directed by Marc Forster ("Quantum of Solace"), may be very different from the best-selling book by Max Brooks. And movie buffs on the Web are certainly rising up like an undead army to denouce the not-yet-finished horror flick.

The novel charts a U.N. worker's accounts of oral histories of a decade-long zombie war. The movie, according to bloggers who saw the press release, will take place as the zombie world war is breaking out when there is still time to stop it -- completely different from the premise -- and the timing -- of the book.

There had been reports that this atypical monster tale would certainly be a challenge to put into film. Paramont's seeming solution? As the AV Club sees it, "Make a typical zombie movie anyway."

Dead Dispatch

If you're anything like me, you geeked out over the 'Dispatches from the Set' that AMC featured on their site for THE WALKING DEAD last season. Well, they're at it again - and chatting it up with series creator Frank Darabont! Here's a little bit of what the man had to say about Season 2:

"We're fleshing out the story in so many different directions. Once you're into this with real actors playing these characters, the dynamics develop over time from episode to episode. There's so much rich story and character to plunder. I don't know if we're giving anything away, but... something as simple in the comic books winds up being sort of a fantastic complication on screen. In the story we're telling, it's just not that simple as it was in the comic book because you have those opportunities to really spin the story out in many different layers. So, that kind of stuff is tremendously exciting to me"

Still Collapsing

Checked in with the Iowa-made zombie movie 'Collapse' to see how close this undead beast is to being finished. According to Jason Bolinger, the film's co-director, 'Collapse' has wrapped on principal photography, been edited, went through the color correction process, and is currently having a score written for it. No word yet on when a release date will be or if the film will be playing on any big screens (or in any festivals), although we have learned that 'Collapse' has attained foreign distribution through Fabrication Films and that they are working diligently on acquiring distribution stateside. As always, when we learn more about this ultra-cool zombie flick, you'll be the first to know. Until then, here's the plot for you in a nutshell:

The normal worries of a struggling small town farmer are blown away when the world is suddenly overrun by undead monsters. How can a good man protect and provide for his family in a hostile world without becoming a monster himself?

I Will Survive

So I finally got around to reading Max Brooks' 'The Zombie Survival Guide.' What did I think? Well - it was okay, but not as accessible as 'World War Z.' This is more of a book that looks good up on a bookshelf, or something you read in airports or while sitting in the waiting room at the doctor's office. The last portion of the book involves past outbreaks and that was definitely the most interesting (hence the graphic novel which was released for it), but unless you're planning on making a zombie movie (or are seriously anticipating an outbreak of undead ghouls), this book can be a bit too thorough for humorous reading. But for fans of George Romero, this is obviously required reading - if only to say you read it...

SMASH!

A little something I threw together last October for our zombie themed Halloween party. The whole thing was constructed mostly from garage sale purchases and cost less than five bucks to make - $1.25 for toy gun and frame which used to contain a butterfly and bug collection that reeked of mothballs, and $1.99 for a can of gray spray paint). I think it turned out pretty cool. It's one of the rare Halloween props that doesn't get stored away - I now have it hanging in my garage...just in case.

Zombie King

I think this news falls under the 'pretty cool' category: genius horror scribe Stephen King is in talks to pen a script for Frank Darabont's THE WALKING DEAD series on AMC. I think this is just what the show needs, for as great as the first season was, the final episode seemed like kind of a let-down to me. I think King is the man to give this program the shot in the arm it needs. Here is the official story:

Iconic horror novelist (and former EW columnist) Stephen King has confirmed with EW that he’s currently in talks to write an episode of the post-apocalyptic series. Dead is executive-produced by Frank Darabont, who has directed three films based on King’s work — four, if you count his 1983 short film The Woman in the Room — and King tells EW exclusively that Darabont “has expressed enthusiastic interest for season 2 or possibly 3.”

WTF?

That's all I can say about this. I knew Rob Zombie loves horror, b-movies, schlock and grindhouse films, heavy metal and other musical influences...but I had no idea he was a coffee connoisseur - much less an entrepreneur in the field of the flavorful bean.
